Sosua Dominican Republic, Los Charamicos It is essentially a peaceful fishing town which has developed into a beach resort for both tourists and locals.

In reality Sosua is divided into two separate villages divided by a bay at whose base is a sandy white beach.

The beach is more than half mile long and behind it are located a continuous row of small bars, restaurants and souvenir shops.

The two halves of Sosua are Los Charamicos (western side) and El Batey (eastern side).

The town developed rapidly in the early 1940`s, when an influx of Jewish settlers, escaping Nazi Germany, settled and developed a dairy industry.

Whilst it caters for those who wish to stay at their all-inclusive, you can also get a sense of being part of the community, a bit like in Cabarete or Las Terrenas.

The rich cultural heritage gives it a cosmopolitan feel.

Sosua Dominican Republic

History

These days the local population live in harmony with a sigificant number of European immigrants.

Many Europeans came to Sosua Dominican Republic as a consequence of the massive exodus generated by the turmoil of World War II.

In 1938 the Dominican Republic committed to assisting other countries in alleviating the distressing consequences of the Holocaust. As a result an immigrant group, made up mostly of German and Austrian Jews, settled in Sosua.

Susequently, the Dominican Republic Settlement Association (DORSA) was established to initiate an experimental agricultural community project.

The refugee group comprised many professionals and skilled craftsmen, and they have made a significant contribution to the regions socio-economic development.

Some immigrants worked in the agricultural industry and founded industrial dairy and cattle production cooperatives.

Today, this cooperative, Productos Sosua,is a powerful enterprise that makes the famous Sosua sausages, cheeses and butter and has its own grocery store chain. It still thrives today.

Golf near Sosua

If you are a fairly serious golfer you have a few choices:

I have played Playa Grande quite a few times [photo right] and it is just over 40 minutes away.

Click on the link for further information. It is quite simply one of the finest in the Caribbean.

In my view it is worth the trip. If you have a non golfer with you they will enjoy driving around in the cart and enjoying the view.

Playa Grande If you don`t believe me on the view check out the photo left.

Please accept my apologies but it yours truly in a state of some euphoria after a rare victory against the good Ambassador.

The photo was taken on the 18th tee.

A nearer course is another Robert Trent Jones, Sr course located just 20 minutes away, in the beautiful Playa Dorada area. This Par 72, 18-hole course serves the 14 resorts within Playa Dorada.

It is a decent course and handy if you are staying in Sosua, Puerto Plata or Playa Dorada. Given the choice however I would drive the extra half hour to Playa Grande.
