Samana Viva Wyndham
No doubt you will be reading this page because you are looking for an all-inclusive resort or hotel near to Las Terrenas or within striking distance of Samana, perhaps for the humpback whale watching.
Unfortunately the Samana Viva Wyndham will be closed for a complete renovation until at least December 15, 2009.
Clearly it is not too helpful to try to describe the hotel when the refurbishment is currently underway! That said there are probably many things that will not change and one of those is the beach.
Above: Samana Wyndham Viva beach
I visited the peninsula in May 2009 and the beach is beautiful with turquoise water and waves which are well suited to body surfing.
If you click here you will see my video when I stayed at Las Terrenas just 10 minutes away. It gives a great idea of the beach/sea.
Indeed it is also rare for the specification of the hotel to reduce. In the past it had 218 rooms, and three restaurants + a snack bar pizzeria.
Pre re-furb there was a buffet style restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner for international fare. In addition there were Mediterranean/Italian dishes at `Mediterraneo`, Oriental food at `Bambu`,
There were also plenty of activities for children including the Kid`s Club, windsurfing; mini tournaments; kayaking; volleyball; sandcastle building; board games; pool games; talent shows etc etc.
Location of Samana Viva Wyndham
Samana Viva Wyndham [cont]
Samana Dominican Republic The hotel is located in the Bahia de Coson which is on the northern part of the Samana Peninsula in eastern Dominican Republic.
This location leaves you around 30-40 minutes by car to Samana, from which you can get a boat to take you whale watching between January and March.
It is true to say that this general area is not the best known in the country for having numerous all-inclusive resorts and the infrastructure that they attract. That mantle goes to both Punta Cana and Puerto Plata. That said, there are some fantastic beaches and attractions in the Samana area.
It used to be accessed via Puerto Plata airport but you can now get there via the new El Catey airport where the transfer will be about 20 minutes.
