Punta Cana Golf Courses

Punta Cana Golf

This section on Punta Cana golf courses is part of a series on the excursions and activities that are available in Puna Cana and Bavaro. See the box on the right for further information.

The Dominican Republic is not necessarily famous for its golf but in my humble opinion [as a former 4 handicapper who now hacks it round!] amongst the Puna Cana golf courses there is something for everyone!

Below we provide an idea of prices and further information about the choice available on your vacation to Punta Cana or Bavaro, along with our recommendations.

Having just returned from playing some in May 2009, we can confirm that they were particularly quiet in the afternoons. A top tip is to look for deals in the afternoon.

Where we do mention prices they are approximations of the cost including carts and transportation to and from your resort.

Cocotal Golf Club

Cocotal Golf Club is situated over the road from the Sol Melia Caribe Tropical and Paradisus Palma Real. This resort includes rounds of golf in the holiday price and they provide a shuttle bus over to the clubhouse.

Indeed the course is only the length of a par 5 from the Melia Caribe Tropical so some people will prefer to walk.

Punta Cana excursions, Bavaro, dominican republic, Caribbean It is a very good resort course and will cost around 156US per round to those who are not staying there.

La Cana Golf Course

La Cana course is one of my favourites as it has some spectacular holes running alongside the Caribbean sea.

Check out our video of the first nine holes below [if you want to see the second nine holes they are also on YouTube].

The cost of playing at La Cana Golf Club is 110US if you are staying at the Punta Cana Resort and Club or 186US for guests.

Catalonia Cabeza de Toro Golf Course

Catalonia Cabeza de Toro Golf Course
is a 9 hole course located at the Catalonia Bavaro Resort. It is a short but nice course and also has a 9 hole pitch and putt.

Catalonia Resort Bavaro The Catalonia Caribe is owned by the same company and is an 18 hole course located further up the road.

The cost is very variable depending on season at between 25-136US.

Barcelo Golf de Bavaro course

The Barcelo Golf de Bavaro course is located at the Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort. Be aware that the back nine of the Barcelo Bavaro golf course will be closed until the end of 2009.

The course is being re-designed by P B Dye [son of the great designer Pete Dye]. As a result the back nine will be closed from 1st March 2009 to 24th December 2009.

Nevertheless you can play the front nine twice to get 18 holes [par 72] and the other facilities will remain open. The cost is around 130US per round although much cheaper for residents of the Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort.

I would avoid this one for now given the excellent choice in the area.

Cap Cana golf Punta Espada golf course

Some of you will have heard about the Cap Cana development where Jack Nicklaus has designed Punta Espada golf course. This is another fantastic golf course but it will cost you between 220-381US depending on the season.

Punta Blana golf course

If you are staying near/in the Bahia Principe Resort you could consider Punta Blanca Golf Course which was designed by Nick Price and will cost 176US per round.

It is 6706 yds par 72 off the blue tees.

A good course with club storgae available and good facilities. It has generous fairways so you can give it a good wack!

There are however special deals if you stay at the Majestic, Barcelo Punta Cana Premium and Bahia Principe.

If you want a more scenic course than this choose to La Cana.

White Sands Golf Course

White Sands Golf Course is located in front of the Ocean Blue and Sands Resort. I haven`t played this one to comment either way. Current costs are around 118US.

Roco Ki Golf Course

Nick Faldo golf Last but not least there is the new Nick Faldo course will will set you back 276US. Again we haven`t yet played this one although have a few comments to the effect that it has not yet `settled down`.

Some merengue recommendations

Juan Luis Guerra is the most popular merengue artist in the Dominican Republic.

His greatest hits collection is a must!

A Bachata recommendation

Bachata is also incredibly popular in the Dominican Republic.

The following album gives a good feel for this type of music.
