national flag of dominican republic

The national flag of Dominican Republic was lifted for the first time in the Cibao on March 4, 1844, just after national independence had been declared after 22 years of Haitian control. The white cross represents an expression of freedom and the red is said to symbolise the fire and blood of the independence struggle. emblem of national flag of dominican republic

A small coat of arms, known as the national seal, is at the centre of the cross. The national seal features six flagstaffs, with four gathered Dominican Republic national flags supporting an open Bible. Above that is a cross of gold.

There are branches of laurel and palm around the shield. To the left is a laurel branch to represent immortality, and to the right a palm branch, a symbol of freedom.

A red ribbon, which symbolizes Glory, unites the branches and over it, a red banner that reads "Dios, Patria y Libertad" (God, Country and Liberty).
