La Romana is the third-largest city in the Dominican Republic with a population estimated in 2005 at 250,000. The city is capital of the southeastern province of La Romana, opposite Catalina Island. The name Romana comes from a balance that was used to weigh merchandise for export.

Other ethnic groups in the Dominican Republic include Haitians, Germans, Italians, Portuguese, Irish, Corsicians, French, Spaniards, and Americans. A smaller yet significant presence of East Asians (primarily ethnic Chinese and Japanese) and Middle Easterners, primarily Lebanese and Jews can be found throughout the population.

In 2008 the Dominican Republic population was estimated to be 9,905,000 by the Joshua Project and the United Nations. This number placed it as the 82nd most populated country out of the 193 nations of the world. In terms of its senior citizens, in 2006 approximately 5% of the population was over 65 years. Another 35% of the population were under 15 years of age.
There were 103 males for every 100 females in the country in 2007.
According to the UN, the annual population growth rate for 2006/2007 was 1.5%, with the projected Dominican Republic population for the year 2015 at 10,121,000. It was estimated by the Dominican government that the population density in 2007 was 192 per km� (498 per sq mi), and 63% of the population lived in urban areas.
Most densely populated areas
The southern coastal plains and the Cibao Valley are the most densely populated areas of the country.
The capital city, Santo Domingo, had a population of 3,014,000 in 2007.
