As the Dominican Republic is basically an island [albeit including Haiti], you will find a reliance on the boat as a mode of transport and as a way of earning a living.

Above: This fishing boat took us from Bayahibe on a 40 minutes ride to Catalina Island. If you do travel in this way ensure that that the forecast is calm. If it cuts up rough it could get scary!
