Cayo Levantado interview

Quite simply, Cayo Levantado is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. It is frequently a stop off point for cruises or tourists to Samana in the Dominican Republic.

When you are on vacation and cannot speak the local language, is is always interesting to imagine how life is for the local people.

At www.dominican-republic-holiday.com we like to interview local people to find out more about the country.

Here Ashers interviews Frank who runs the main bar on the public beach on the island.

The interview is in Spanish but the transcription in below in English. [cont left]

Transcript of Cayo Levantado interview with Frank at the Cayo Levantado Bar

Q] So Frank, how long have you been working here?
A] Two years.

Q] Two years. And where are you from?
A] From Samana.

Q] So what were you doing beforehand?
A] Working in the hotel industry.

Q] So what happens at the end of the day? Do you go back to the mainland or do you stay on the island?
A] No we go to the mainland on a boat.

Q] So at what time do you arrive?
A] Well we arrive at 8 in the morning, and close up at 5 at night.

Q] So according to the law yo uhave to evacuate the island every evening?
A] Yes.

Q] So what is the busiest period for you, when do most tourists come? For example, is it when the whales come (January to March)?
A] Yes, this is the time when most tourists come to our country, or should I say to our province.

Q] So how many come during that busy period?
A] Well during that period when many people come we are often talking about 2 to 3 cruise ships a day. Each cruise ship brings in around 3,000 plus passengers, plus we have the people who come on boat excursions from the mainland.

Q] So for the rest of the year it`s not like that?
A] After the fifth month (May) for two or three months hence the tourist traffic goes down.

Q] But, say, in September it picks up again?
A] Yes from September it resumes "on full power"!

Q] From September?
A] Yes.

Q] (holding up a bottle of Dominican "Presidente" beer) And this is served a lot in the bars of the Dominican Republic.
A] "Presidente". Very good beer.

Q] (holding up the beer bottle again) Also, there is a "Presidente Light" that is also very good, but frank hasn`t got any today.
A] I owe you one!!

Q] Many thanks Frank and good luck.
