Melia Caribe Punta Cana - Summary and Conclusions
NIGHTLY SHOW Now I must preface this piece by stating that I am not the biggest fan of shows at Dominican all-inclusives and it is not at the top of my list when chooing a resort. At the Sol Melia Caribe Tropical Punta Cana there is a different show every night. These included the following:
Now obviously I am biased because I play in a band and have done for 20 years! I would like to see more actual singing and less dancing. That is not that the dancers are not talented. They are. It is more about the balance of the entertainment. The nightly show at the Sol Melia Caribe Tropical Punta Cana was OK and in fairness compared reasonably well with the other all-inclusives in the Dominican Republic. Weekly theme parties Whilst we were there was a toga party! The below video is of one of the shows Caribe Tropical Punta Cana. NB:after starting the movie, the `HQ` button will appear in the right hand corner. If you click on it it will give a higher quality picture but this is dependent on your internet connection]. CASINO The Casino is relatively small but they have most games including slot machines, Blackjack, 2 Poker tables and Roulette. I am not a habitual user of casino`s but really enjoyed playing Roulette. The minimum bet is 1US and be aware that there is smoking in the casino.
This is the place where most people gather in the evening and it is a great place to hang out and listen to the music. They do have a variety of entertainment here.
Caribe Tropical Punta Cana There are bars in Plaza Bavaro near to the resort. At the Punta Cana shopping centre is the Marant disco-lounge-bar. Outside of the resorts, dining establishments can be found in the Bavaro commercial areas, in Cabeza de Toro, El Cortecito and Punta Cana shopping mall, as well as at the Punta Cana Resort and Club's La Yola and Cocoloba restaurants (reservations required). If you really want busy, bustling nightlife you are probably better off going to Puerto Plata although it does not have the quality of beach that Punta Cana does. Alternatively you could stay near to the capital Santo Domingo. The Punta Cana area is a bit more laid back and more orientated to couples and families.
4 Wheel Adventure(65 US): Collected from the resort it was about a 45-minute trip. This excursion lasted for around 2 hours and included a visit to a cave with a 25-30 foot deep pool of water. There was the opportunity to dive into the pool and enjoy this special place. Children seemed to particularly enjoy it! We then moved on Macao beach for some swimming. A DVD was available for [as the trip was filmed by a tour guide] at a cost of 30US.
Monster Truck (90US): A full day trip from 8am-6pm with about an hour to the Monster trucks. It was fairly crowded and a little bumpy so be prepared to rough it for the day! Plenty of drinks were available and the trip took in a visit to a local family [to try their coffee] and a farm [to try their fruits, candy and sugar cane] and a school. Later their was time for a Dominican meal and a swim in the river. There was a visit to a local `magic man` on the way home for a photo opportunity! Horseback Riding (60 US): My other half enjoyed this one, afterall which woman does not want to ride a horse on a beach! There was a 30 minute ride to the ranch which was next to the Breezes resort. After checking previous experience they matched you with an appropriate horse. It was short trek to the beach and then you were allowed to let the horses run. We visited a coconut grove and then tied up the horses and had time to swim in the ocean. During our swimming time the guide had cut down some coconuts and so we were able to enjoy the milk and meat. This trip lasted 2 hours.
Caribe Tropical Punta Cana This one lasted about 4 hours and started at around 8am in the morning. The group went out on a 40 ft boat. Not too much was caught but nevertheless enjoyable!
This is a long day so be sure to plunder some food and drinks to take with you. It is a long day at around 11-12 hours and take some insect repellent. You do get alcoholic beverages on the catamaran and then you eat fairly early. That said it is a beautiful location. Dolphin Island Tour: Didn`t do this one but lots of people did. Apparently you get the chance to swim with the dolphins and also nurse sharks and stingrays also!! Marinarium Catamaran Sail: Didn`t do this either but they told us that it was a large catamaran with the opportunity to view coral reef and marine life, even through an enclosed underwater area where there are nurse sharks and stingrays. Apparently quite a party atmosphere. Parasail: 10 minutes for 80US.

Some merengue recommendationsJuan Luis Guerra is the most popular merengue artist in the Dominican Republic. His greatest hits collection is a must!
A Bachata recommendationBachata is also incredibly popular in the Dominican Republic. The following album gives a good feel for this type of music.
