Bavaro beach
Bavaro beach The photo`s of the Playa de Bavaro were certainly one the main reasons that I first visited the Dominican Republic. The enchanting images of white sands, palm trees, turquoise sea, and blue skies were my view of a Caribbean paradise. I have been fortunate to have stayed at all inclusives resorts along the coast of Bavaro. My first experience was the Melia Caribe Tropical All Inclusive Beach & Golf Resort in Punta Cana, which has its own stretch of Bavaro beach.
The Catalonia Royal Bavaro was to the south of the Melia Tropical Caribe and whilst I had no complaints about the sea water at the MTC, when you are in Bavaro, the water is a little calmer to the south. Can you choose a poor beach in Bavaro? Not really, all the beaches on the stretch of coastline are superb. All that you have to watch out for is whether they are regularly cleaned. If they are not they can accumulate sea weed which is a bit of an irritation if the resort next door is keeping theirs clean! Free public beaches in/near Bavaro The map below gives the locations of the public beaches. Check out where they are in relation to some of the better known resorts. continued below

You can go to the Bavaro beach itself by accessing aside the Barcelo beach resort. Look out for the entrance road by the sign for "Jellyfish restaurant". It is an excellent beach area and calm water. There are beaches with access from public roads at Cabeza de Toro, El Cortecito and Macao. El Cortecito With of this area being dominated by large all inclusive resorts, El Cortecito is the nearest thing to a beach town in the area. It has a public beach area with some excellent seafood restaurants, bars and shops selling souvenirs arts and crafts.
El Cortecito`s beach [Playa Cortecito] is accessible to everyone and once you are on the sand you can walk to the beach areas of the resorts although you are not suppose to enter resort property beyond the beach. There are plenty of bars and restaurants around and probably the best known is restaurant in El Cortecito is the "Capitan Cook" where you can eat lobster and fresh fish all year round. Cabeza de Toro Cabeza de Toro is another free beach which is walkable from El Cortecito. It is quieter and not crowded. This area of white sands is adjacent to the Cabeza de Toro Yacht Club which is used for summer fishing tournaments.
Another free alternative is Macao beach which is about 40 minutes from Punta Cana. This beach is not as good for those families with small children. Check out the seafood in the hut at the end of the beach! Bavaro beach Can I enjoy long walks along the beach? In Dominican law beaches are public and in theory, you can freely stroll along the 40km beach strip going from one hotel's beach front to another! There are however practical considerations because some resorts won't let you past their gates unless you are staying there or buying a day pass. My experience is that there is plenty of beach to enjoy a long walk, take your MP3 player and headphones, I wouldn`t be without mine!

Water Sports
Most people staying in an all-inclusive will have ready access to water sports however for those doing so there is no shortage of businesses offering rental of small boats, kayaks, para-sailing, and diving etc. You get a flavour for this area by having a look at the video below.
Getting around The easiest way to visit the other hotels is to take a stroll along the beach. Or take the beach taxi to El Cortecito or to the Cabeza de Toro area. If you want to check out the location of your hotel to the beaches have a look below.
Snorkeling Punta Cana features the longest coral reef in the whole island - about 30 kilometers long. Snorkeling is OK from the shore, particularly if like me you don`t do it often ! For more advanced snorkellers there are good areas near the reef and you can get snorkeling excursions. Dive boats take groups out to The Aquarium (east of Club Med) and towards the reef off El Cortecito beach or to the area near the Riu Taino hotel. Scuba Diving Diving is good, not great, because just off shore from the Punta Cana side the water is riddled with barrier reefs. The area is most appropriate for new divers. It is a great place to learn to dive as the waters are shallow even when quite far out. Excursions will take you to discover a shipwreck and lots of nice coral formations, channels and tunnels. Bavaro beach
Due to the spear fishermen you pass on the way out, there is not a huge variety of fish and some of the larger species have largely been fished out of the shallower waters surrounding the DR. Further off shore however, there is good big game fishing to be had. If you are serious about scuba diving, but still want to vacation in the Punta Cana area you may participate in dive excursions to Catalina and Saona islands, a two hour drive away. These dives are attractive to both beginners and advanced scuba divers.
In this region, big game fishing is good and annual tournaments draw international participants in the summer. You can look forward to catching blue marlin, barracuda, and dorado among others. Best fishing is in the summer. Arrangements can be made at hotel front desks or at Cabeza de Toro beach area. Windsurfing and parasailing At the point where the Caribbean and Atlantic Oceans meet, the winds are powerful so this is a good area for windsurfing and parasailing.
