At www.dominican-republic-holiday.com we like to interview local people to find out more about the country.
Here Ashers interviews Lester who is the manager/co-ordinator of Altos.
The interview is in Spanish but the English transcription is below:
A] I am the co-ordinator.
Q] How long has Altos de Chavon been here?
A] Approximately 30 years.
Q] So is this about the same time as Casa de Campo has been in existence?
A] Not that long. No Casa de Campo was originally a hotel built closer to La Romana, then the larger Casa de Campo campus developed, then after that major development was in train Altos de Chavon was developed.[cont right]

Altos de Chavon interview [cont]
Q] So what is the idea behind Altos de Chavon, tell us the story.
A] Well there are lots of conflicting stories about the origins and why Altos de Chavon was built. For example, some say that the founder/owner wanted to establish it as a gift for his daughter. Then other say "no", it was built with the idea of an artistic place designed to show Dominican Art for visitors. Then another theory is that
is was constructed as a sort of copy of an artists village in Spain from the 16th century -a replica of this. There
are many people that, when they visit Altos de Chavon, think it must be something that was established, say, in the
18th century, and can`t believe it was only established 30 years ago.
Q] So there are many different strands of art here right?
A] Yes like you see in the museum.
Q] What else?
A] The art gallery, where you can see works produced in the art school that we have here in Altos de Chavon -paintings, drawings, sculptures, jewellery etc. The school does all types of courses in these disciplines.
